Defacing the Currency A couple of the pieces in this collection bored me, but on the whole I was very impressed It seems to cover a fairly wide variety of topics without becoming stale. The essay undermining Chomsky s anarchist credibility has been needed for a long time now Not only does it make clear that Chomsky is not an anarchist and puts forth counter anarchist ideas, but there is also a blow toward his followers, who, when it comes down to it, aren t really anarchists either, despite their claim otherwise Th A couple of the pieces in this collection bored me, but on the whole I was book, the criticism remains just as important today Bob Black is certainly a controversial writer within anarchist circles, so I wasn t quite sure what to expect with this book I was however, pleasantly surprised by it The longest essay is a critique of Noam Chomsky s anarchist views, which is especially useful if read as a larger critique of the leftist views of which Chomsky represents Equally important is Black s essay criticizing democracy Both essays are important anarchist critiques of the left.Other essays cover crime, the war on dru Bob Black is certainly a controversial consider to be the finest anarchist writer of my generation, which is Bob s generation, too We are the same age, grew up miles apart in Michigan, but did not know each other until our paths crossed at the same age, grew up miles apart in Michigan, but did not know each other until our paths crossed at Loompanic Unlimited in Port Townsend, Washington.I was an editor at Loompanics where they published Bob Black s seminal tome, The Abolition of Work and Other Essays Years of studying economics, politics and philosophy left me unprepared for Black s lucid writing on the nature of work The perspective was fresh, the writing powerful, and the research incredible, as reflected in Bob s entertaining, elaborate and useful footnotes. In Defacing the Currency, the footnotes are back Footnotes take up half of some pages Concluding his important essay, Debunking Democracy, Black says, For a voter, the only difference between the lottery and an election is that he might win the lottery Even that zinger is footnoted and references French anarchist Pierre Joseph Proudhon With Bob Black, a lot of the action is below the belt and you need to read the footnotes to get the jokes.Black s encyclopedic knowledge of anarchist history is on display in Chomsky on the Nod, a brutal rebuttal of Noam Chomsky s self proclaimed anarchism and two self absorbed books, On Anarchism and Occupy Reflections on Class War, Rebellion and Solidarity Occupied Media Pamphlet Series Chomsky was way past due for a beat down like this, and there is no better intellectual gutter fighter than Bob Black It s clear Chomsky wants no part of the anarchy envisioned by libertines like Bob Black, nor does he understand or desire the anarchy championed by such as P J Proudhon,Peter Kropotkin,Emma Goldman,Lysander Spooner,Benjamin Ricketson Tucker,Paul Goodman,Theodore John Kaczynski,John Zerzan, or anyone who seeks revolutionary removal of the state. The anarchism Chomsky advocates is not anarchism at all, Black repeatedly points out Chomsky believes in voting Chomsky believes in The Law and obeying The Law Chomsky believes in human nature and he believes in natural law, but this is a fairy tale, Black shows, quoting The Myth of Natural Rights, by L.A Rollins Loompanics, 1983 , among other works What is the difference between the parables Noam Chomsky tells and those in The Bible or in the writings of Joseph Campbell or Ayn Rand One of the stories Noam Chomsky tells is the tech is gonna save us So Bob Black spends 10 delightful pages disassembling Chomsky s technophilia and the delusions of other so called techno anarchists who believe the array of goods and services we are accustomed to can be delivered without a state It s impossible to be anti capitalist and pro democratic, Black writes, with a footnote to French philosopher Alain Badiou It s hypocritical to be pro consumer and anti producer You simply cannot get the large piles of capital that post industrial capitalism requires without a very brutal State to enforce ownership Defacing the Currency is easily the most satisfying book I ve read in a decade Black has the same focus on reality that Max Stirner had an ability to clear the fog and see the honest lay of the land His arguments about the relationships between democracy, capitalism and technology are similar to those made by Ted Kaczynski in the new book, Anti Tech Revolution Why and How The footnotes, however, are completely different Kaczynski is serving life in prison and has a limited library most of his footnotes are to The World Book Encyclopedia Black is a college professor endowed with an enormous stack of references. The conclusions, however, are chilling The State unleashes capitalism because it achieves faster growth rates and hires, fires, and re trains workers faster than the State can Once birthed, however, capitalism chafes at the restraints of the State and proceeds to take over the State Witness how in 2018, Koch Industries, the largest handler of toxic chemicals in the U.S., essentially owns the Environmental Protection Agency, run by their hand picked and meticulously groomed stooge, Scott Pruitt. The goal of capitalism it to maximize profit and minimize costs Under capitalism, every human being is a cost you can and will be eliminated As Kaczynski sees it, we have created something that succeeds by eliminating us and it s incapable of stopping itself Sounds like artificial intelligence to mehubris than human Make sure to make time for the pleasure of reading Bob Black s Defacing the with democracy, technology, anarchism, and the law Bob Black is an obsessed, intelligent, and hostile thinker whose writings are, if not the most, then among the most clear contemporary anarchist
