A riveting well written adventure story, much to enjoy and unlike many other books of a similar vein no compromises. an exellent book.interesting and thrilling with lots of historical and political information plus lovable characters. Really interesting book Lots of facts, history and current politic through the World Really liked it and makes me sad that it ended. Despite receiving this as part of the Transworld Historical Reading Challenge, this book is set firmly in modern times beginning with a murder in the Armenian Cathedral in Jerusalem and stretching of the most complicated areas of the modern world Jerusalem and Luxor with two detectives from very different cultures and backgrounds working at different elements of the mystery The characters are well written and different enough to stand out from the raft of modern detectives Ariah Ben Roi is the detective in Jerusalem who struggles against politics in his precinct and city while investigating the murder He is also expecting his first child and is trying to find the balance between work and his new family responsibilities To be honest, I found this element muchinteresting as Ben Roi works with a new partner and has a good side line in banter that made his parts of the story comfortable and amusing The Egyptian detective, Yusuf Khalifa has suffered a family tragedy in the recent past and this is palpable in his actions and decisions throughout the story, but does feel a little heavy However the two ends of the investigation dovetail nicely and build up a lot of tension and questions many of which aren t answered until the end I really liked the way a lot of the discoveries are made through good old fashioned police work investigating connections, exploring paperwork and using the brain.Paul Sussman has a great eye of detail and obviously loves this region of the world I feel like I could navigate both Luxor and Jerusalem just using this story as a map and guidebook However, on occasion knowing that the exact address of every place feels like too much detail and not overly relevant to the story While a little slow at the beginning, the pace picks up considerably towards the end with an exciting and emotional few pages This is an intelligent thriller with a unique setting and a well woven plot and one I would recommend for those wanting to try something a little different Won through a Goodreads Giveaway This is the first novel I have read by the late Paul Sussman but it will not be the last Although it s saddening that this collection of stories involving Yusuf Khalifa and Arieh Ben Roi, I look forward to reading the other two books that preceded this one The story is told in such a atmospheric and descriptive manner that it s hard not to feel like I m in the deserts of Egypt or on the streets of Jerusalem I thoroughly enjoyed the pace of this novel as well Won through a Goodreads Giveaway This is the first novel I have read by pace of this novel as well The moments of boredom were far and few between The interweaving stories really help keep the story moving forward Initally I was confused as to what everything had to do with anything until the layers started to peel off What s most interesting about this novel are the main characters Khalifa and Ben Roi and their differences Khalifa is Muslim and Ben Roi is Jewish The author poked fun at their differences in a way that wasn t offensive but also brought a little laughter to a rather dark storyline I mention a dark storyline because Khalifa is the one with the most baggage that is heartbreaking at moments Overall, both leads were well written and are the reasons why I would love to go back from the beginning of this series. My one problem with this book is that this is where a great series ends I am so happy that I had the oppurtunity to read this novel I probably would not have picked it up had I not won it so thanks again Goodreads for broadening my horizons A book I would have liked to take on holiday with me, just to be able to read without the interferences of everyday life Starting in Luxor, Egypt in 1931 with a young boy witnessing something distressing and moving quickly to the present day with a murder in the Armenian Quarter of the Old City of Jerusalem the investigation fans out in what appears to be unlinked ways Confronting in the descriptions of the seedy side of life and some of the language also not to my taste, however, the story is A book I would have liked to take on holiday with me, just to be able to read without the story is so convoluted and good that you just have to know what is going to happen next.A look at corporate greed, the politics of middle eastern countries and the animosity that exists between different cultures and religions The personal stories within the story are intertwined with ease and only add to the depth of the main characters An excellent very well written book, I was torn between a 4 or 5 star rating
