This is the third in the series and can be read as a standalone It is easy to be drawn into this world of retired military men, trying to make the world a better place, one dog at a time. From the start of the book, it is explosive, literally Starting from the explosion, this book moves at a fast pace The tie in with the Brandon s company and his ability to help a friend out is well done It sucks a reader in and keeps them locked into the storyline Brandon is back home after being on tour for so long This time, he s finally back to stay He is also looking forward to renewing his friendship with Sophie Kim Sophie is the girl he let go He wanted her but knew that she deserved better This is how he thought Sophie on the other hand wants to know why she isn t good enough to keep him.The characters in this story are fun and engaging I loved that Sophie is Korean I wasn t expecting this when I picked up the book because I honestly didn t read the blurb All I saw was German Shepherd and I picked it up on a lark This book pulled me in with the character development The little nuances of being a single Korean female were spot on Having an older Korean neighbor checking up on Sophie is so realistic What is a bit funny and not so realistic were the comments on how Sophie can catch her sexy man, Brandon Her elderly neighbor is oh so helpful. The plot in this story is well done There are no real surprises even if Ms Drake tries to throw the reader off with a couple of red herrings It is clear to me from the very beginning who the aggressor is in the book The ending is not a surprise at all What is nice, is the little twists and turns to arrive to this ending I liked how Ms Drake tied in a few threads to make this acomplicated storyline This includes the romantic element that is frustrating yet sweet Brandon keeps trying to do what he thinks is best for Sophie This is frustrating because he thinks he is reading her right and he is not Communicate, serious, just talk to Sophie I felt bad for Sophie at one point because I wanted to scream too and hit Brandon Sophie s patience with Brandon isthan I could ever do When the two finally burn up the sheets, it is sweet The sex is a littlethan vanilla which could categorize this story as erotic for some For a jaded sex addict like me, the chemistry and sex between Brandon and Sophie is sweetly romance This romantic suspense is recommended for readers who enjoy military men, loyal trusty dogs and happily ever aftersprovided by NetGalley Having loved the previous two books in this series I grabbed the chance to read this one and, not surprisingly, found it to be another enthralling page turner I don t think you d have to read the first two to appreciate and enjoy this one, though they do follow on human ones Brandon Forte returned to his hometown after leaving the military He has set up a training facility for military service dogs, Hope Crossing Kennels, running it with two other ex military men the romances of whom feature in the first two novels in this series Needless to say, their canine charges are also stars in the stories Brandon s main reason for returning to his hometown is Sophie Kim They ve known each other since high school and are friends but both would like to bethough they haven t told the other one that The action packed story starts explosively and continues in a fast paced, action packed thriller as Brandon and his team try to protect Sophie from repeated attacks, strive to determine why she is the target and keep her safe. This is another suspense filled romance from this talented author whose personal knowledge of owning and training retired working dogs is a key element in the stories As usual when I read her books, I really didn t want to put it down I have no hesitation in highly recommending this to anyone who enjoys well crafted, suspense filled, covert action packed novels with alpha males human and canine and feisty females in danger with a canine military dog playing an important role, too I was gifted a copy of this, without obligation, via NetGalley This is my honest review Link to full review below Book 3 in the series and last installment to the series and with a heavy heart I m afraid to say my least favourite This series without a doubt is fantastic and Ms Drake has done a good job not that she needs any validation on my part in creating something so unique with each book But this one just didn t work for me.Brandon Sophie have been friends for years when they were teenagers they werebut that changed the day a doubt is fantastic and Ms Drake has done a good job not that she needs any validation on my part in creating something so unique with each book But this one just didn t work for me.Brandon Sophie have been friends for years when they were teenagers they werebut that changed the day Brandon walked away without saying a word After each tour he always came back to Sophie But without ever saying anything about his true feelings for her Years pass and they both still hold onto that friendship without moving forward they are stuck in a comfortable rut These two characters have been in the first two books and yet I still couldn t get a feel for them It was too fleeting and in this book it wasn t much better I didn t see or really feel a connection between them in the book well to be honest nothingthan friends Writing a story and getting the MC out of the friend zone can be quite tricky and here this what happened It was hard to get them out of that zone There isn t a lot of chemistry between them but I could be oblivious to it has been known to happen Blind as a bat and all that nonsense The heroine Sophie Kim is reliable, sensible, and responsible To put it in plain English Sophie Kim is a bit of a dull girl It improved somewhat throughout the book but I would have liked to have seenof a change The Hero of the book well I really can t tell you much about him His feelings were clear but he put up so many roadblocks and so many things were left unsaid There were obstacles where none where necessary. The plot of the book is a good storyline to run with Sophie s job as an accountant nearly gets her killed, yeah I know you would have thought huh If it hadn t been for Haydn the German Shephard then she would have been toast Right place right time and all that This leads to severaldangerous incidents that occur that leads to contract being out there on her Brandon whisks her away to protect her But if there was such limited contact to the outside how did they find her That would have been interesting to know Yeah I get it probably just me and my idiocrasy that I want to know and no one else does This is a story of second chance romance reconnecting with the past and coming to terms with it and trying to move forward together And in a way it is a cute read, mindboggling because I didn t get some of heroine s issue A fear that he will leave again Some things that I found to be of importance that added to the story or would have helped where briefly mentioned and well it was done and dusted Although they work through the hows and the whys of him leaving I still didn t feel as if the outcome was what it was meant to be There is such a big problem with the family and then we don t see him being welcomed into the family I thought what is the reasoning behind the whole story. Now all in all this is a good and strong read and I enjoyed it very much Ms Drake is talented and I enjoy her work and an author to watch out for Maybe it is the trope of second chance romance or I was just not feeling it Who knows I know nothing I would recommend the series as it is a pleasure to read Review can also be found received by Barclay Publicity via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review I ended up stopping at pg 124 around 38% in.This is the first time I ve read Ms Drake and a book in the True Heroes series Their are previous characters around, ones that are couples now and friends to our leads, and so I m missing out on the connections I don t feel the camaraderie or friendships like I might if I read the books in order As for Absolute Trust everything feels slow The plot is slow and the romance is nonexistent Even with them both having torches for each other since high I ended up stopping at pg 124 around 38% in.This is the first time I pick up Absolute Trust again after I try out the previous books published. the first time in my reading career, I m delving into a contemporary romance featuring a Korean American heroine For me, feels like a huge milestone Unfortunately, although the author nails the heroine, the romance itself leaves me wanting.Sophie Kim is best friends with Brandon Forte and has been since childhood For most of that time, she has been in love with him However, after high school graduation, he enlists in the military and leaves her without an explanation or a good bye Now he is back and establishes Hope s Crossing Kennels, a first class training facility specializing in military and law enforcement dogs They are back to being friends but neither is brave enough to confront why he left in the first place In the backdrop of the romance is a threat posed by a shadow black ops organization that is targeting the people associated with Hope s Crossing First established in book one, Extreme Honor, they have Sophie in their cross hairs This menace prompts Brandon to take action to protect her and finally makes him face his true feelings. The best part of this book for me is Sophie s characterization Piper Drake accurately describes my own experience growing up as a Korean American immigrant Being Korean American is relevant to the story, not just a one dimensional detail Sophie lives under the heavy weight of her family s expectations Although she struggles under their assumptions of success by becoming an accountant, she longs to follow her own passions to open a bed and breakfast She wants to be a good daughter, but also wants to live her own life as well Up until now, she allows others to dictate her choices, including her relationship with Brandon. The author also does a great job of picking up the little details that makes Sophie s Korean American experience I relate to the pride Sophie has for sharing her food, the long handled spoons, and the always available hot water from her hot pot Sharing Korean food is particularly meaningful to me As a kid, I did not often invite my friends over to my house for dinner because Korean food is very aromatic and after several negative interactions and comments, I just avoided the whole issue Instead of a source of pride, it became a source of embarrassment and shame It tickles me pink to know that now people from all backgrounds seek out Korean restaurants and grocery stores Although it is still not conventional, I love that there is an appreciation for sundubu jiggae tofu stew and tteokguk rice cake soup.I wish there could have beeninteractions with the parents Unfortunately, Sophie s family is out of town during the time of the story and we do not get first hand interactions with them We only learn about the family dynamics through flashbacks Considering how much their expectations have set the course of Sophie s life, I think this is a missed opportunity. While Sophie s story is spot on, her romance with Brandon is a bit of a miss I love Brandon I love how Brandon cares for Sophie I love that he comes to her house while she is rehabilitating and cooks her a meal However, I do not feel the chemistry between them Yes, they both care deeply for one another and there is a hint of a Romeo and Juliet sentiment to their story However, because of their history, there is an assumption that we understand the depths of their attachment to one another This a challenge with all second chance love stories There needs to be enough of the couple s history to establish the deep attraction that propels it to the present I missed that in this book. There is a lot to like about this story good friends, good times, and moments of high suspense The individual characters are admirable and relatable, but I want so muchfrom the romance Instead, I will remember this book for Sophie s story for making this immigrant s story a littlemainstream Originally published at Reading RealityThis was a case of the right book at the right time for me I really needed a at Reading RealityThis was a case of the right book at the right time for me I really needed a straightforward romance suspense, and with its terrific combination of hot romance and nail biting tension, Absolute Trust completely filled that need. With a tiny bit of quibble at the very end We ll get there. The story is all about Sophie and Brandon and Haydn and Tessa and getting out of the friend zone and moving towards the future If everyone survives, that is.Brandon and Sophie were friends in high school And they are friends now In the middle, there was a giant rough spot that Brandon wants to paper over and Sophie needs to just get over But first she has to know what happened way back then.Sophie has always loved Brandon And seemingly vice versa But Brandon never believed he was good enough for Sophie, and her father certainly agreed with that assessment So instead of sticking around and pursuing a relationship, Brandon joined the military the night of their high school prom.Sophie never even got to say goodbye And she never got over him She also never managed to get past that her first lover dumped her without a word, turning all the dreams they shared that one night into dust Brandon may have bravely run into the fight, but he also rather cowardly ran away from Sophie.Brandon comes home after his deployments, and opens Hope s Crossing Kennels And Sophie steps up to be his friend, because that s all she believes they can ever have And she believes it s worth staying in the friend zone just to keep Brandon in her life.Until someone plants a bomb under her car, and she barely escapes certain death through sheer luck Brandon just happened to be out walking Haydn, a new recruit at the Kennels The big German Shepherd dog has a prosthetic leg, and a nose for sniffing out explosives It s Haydn s alert that saves all their lives. And plunges Sophie s entire world into chaos, leaving her with her life in tatters and only Brandon to hang onto Hiding from Sophie s would be killers, on the run for their lives, Brandon and Sophie finally manage to open all the cans of worms they ve been stepping around for years.Once all the baggage is finally dropped, can they have a future together Do they have a future at all Escape Rating B I picked up Absolute Trust after I discovered that Piper J Drake is also PJ Schnyder I loved her science fiction romance series, both London Undead and The Triton Experiment, so I was thrilled to see that she was still writing in a different space. From her SFR, I knew she was good at mixing romance with suspense The worlds of both series are not exactly safe or sane And that she was good at throwing her hero and heroine together in the midst of life threatening danger. So it proves in Absolute Trust Whatever they were before, the relationship between Brandon and Sophie in this story has to survive a crucible of fire, as do they And whatever baggage they have hanging around, and it s a ton They also have to figure out if they have a chance as the people they are now Brandon in particular has been tried by fire, under fire, and the compartmentalization necessary to be a military operative is still very much a part of him He is scared, and rightfully so, that the deadly side of his nature might frighten Sophie away. But because he has managed to paper over all the issues that made him leave Sophie the first time, he has difficulty understanding that the biggest problems between them aren t in the present, but in the past He left her once without a word How can she ever trust that he won t do it again Absolute Trust is the third book in the author s True Heroes series Although this is the first book in the series that I have read, I did not feel lost at all The previous heroes and heroines appear just enough to provide a sense of continuity and the feel of a working community, without being so much a part of the story that the reader needsthan the background provided This story isn t about the past of the group, it s about the past between Brandon and Sophie, and that s all here.I also liked Brandon and Sophie as the hero and heroine quite a bit Absolute Trust is a twist on the friends into lovers trope, and its done well The very real dilemma of whether it is worth risking their solid friendship to grab foris handled well on both sides As is Sophie s intense realization that she has been taking the easy, non conflict path her entire life, instead of doing the hard work of sticking up for what she truly wants I loved the way she figured out that she needed to make some serious changes, whether or not Brandon remained a part of her life.Something I particularly enjoyed about this story is that the danger to Sophie was caused by her work She didn t have a stalker or a vicious ex She wasn t a victim in need of a rescue Her difficulties were the result of her own actions rather than her inactions, in spite of the fact that her epiphany about her life did have to do with taking a too easy path There are too many suspense stories where men become endangered because they did something, where women become endangered merely because they are women I liked this trip to the danger zone much better. The one issue I had with Absolute Trust is that it didn t quite stick the dismount The story is completely absorbing from beginning to end, but it doesn t seem to end with complete resolution Sophie and Brandon are still trying to work things out They need a bittime for the ending to feel like an HEA At the same time the bad guys that they are fighting against don t seem unequivocally gone Probably gone, but not quite certain If there is a fourth book in the series I hope that some of these issues get resolved.Haydn and Tessa were the secondary stars of this show, and provided heroism and comic relief at the appropriate moments As a tiny feline, Tessa seems to just embody cat Brandon s description of her pointedly washing ALL her bits right in front of him as the equivalent of a cat giving him the finger was perfectly hilarious Also perfectly true 3.5 stars Brandon Forte has returned to his hometown and is running a training facility for military Brandon Forte has returned to his hometown and is running a training facility for military dogs, the Search and Protect Corporation He is working alongside two other men previously in the military Although he never makes it clear to her, the reason Brandon returned is to be close to Sophie Kim They went to high school together and have remained good friends Alienated since he joined the almost took Sophie s life, Brandon becomes her protector, alongside his dog, Haydn Haydn is in need of physical therapy as he had to have his front left leg replaced Brandon s primary job is to rehabilitate Haydn. The explosion was not an accident and Sophie s safety is in question, so Brandon and his team devise a plan This is critical because while they try and decide who could be after Sophie, they cannot help to worry about the other women whose lives were previously threatened Forced to now spend time together at this time gives both Brandon and Sophie the opportunity to tell each other how they feel.Sophie has other major concerns She has been all but forced to become an accountant to please her demanding family, but she has always had hopes of opening a bed and breakfast If they won t let her live that dream, could they be the reason Brandon and Sophie didn t make it as a couple while in high school, then as adults This is a fast paced story, filled with suspense and danger, as well as the budding romance developing between Sophie and Brandon Her fears, the aftermath of Brandon s time in the service, and his reticence in believing he is the man Sophie needs and Haydn s rehab are all handled well during the pages of this engaging read Also, readers cannot forget the cat that Sophie adopts I have enjoyed the first two books of the series, and am reading the
