book I love, I can go on and on A book I hated, sometimes that s even easier But a book that was just fine is hard to discuss Anyway, nothing really wrong with this book I liked both Jackson and Sarah Sarah was certainly a sympathetic character but in some ways it was almost too much Too many mustache twirling villains coming after her And Jackson maybe falls a bit on the too perfect side, but as I twirling villains coming after her And Jackson maybe falls a bit on the too perfect side, but as I ve said before, I actually don t mind that so much in a romance hero But overall I just wasn t overly engaged in their story It didn t grab me and make me root for them to be together the way my favorite romances do So, without sounding like I m damning with faint praise, it was fine I enjoyed it while I was reading it and it was a quick read I ll probably read the brothers books at some point But it never really pulled itself beyond that for me This was the first book that I ve read by Kat Martin, so I went into it with no preconceived ideas of what to expect from her storytelling and writing style I know she s published several books, so I expected, at the very least, to enjoy the story, which for the most part, I did While I think that the premise of the story, and Jackson Raines as a character, were good, I felt like the writing itself was inconsistent Sometimes it flowed writing style I know she s published several books, so I expected, at the very least, to enjoy the story, which for the most part, I did While I think that the premise of the story, and Jackson Raines as a character, were good, I felt like the writing itself was inconsistent Sometimes it flowed really well, and other times it felt choppy Sometimes I was able to feel what I was reading, and other times not For example, this room service order they received soundedlike the reading of the daily special from a menu There was nothing about the scents of the food that might make it sound appealing, it was an inventory of what was on their plates They ordered two filets, medium rare, and Jackson added a bottle of Stag s Leap Napa Valley cabernet The plates came piping hot with fully loaded baked potatoes, two big green salads, and there was a strawberry shortcake for dessert Other than to say that Jackson picked at his food, there was no indication of whether they enjoyed the meal, only that a paragraph or two later they were done I can only explain it by saying it felt empty And then there were repeated unnecessary descriptions of the clothing that people were wearing, and it came across to me anyway as a fashion report And after their first time making love, which felt very unexciting to me, Sarah was thinking to herself what a demanding and intense lover Jackson was And even Jackson, when recounting their love making of the night before said to Sarah, I m a man, after all, and a fairly demanding lover Seriously, I went back several pages to see what I missed, and found nothing that convinced me that he was anything other than average I won t go into a lot of character details, because unfortunately, they didn t really stand out to me, although Jackson was at least consistent in his feelings for Sarah, whose emotions were wishy washy at best Now, given all she d been through, that would have been understandable, but we then go back to the lack of emotional detail given to them.I felt like the whole murder on the run investigation aspect of the story wasn t quite as convincing as it could have been, and needed to be I don t want to go into detail about this and possibly ruin the story for anyone who might read it But I will say that while Jackson s actions and emotions were consistent with what I might have expected from an alpha male, they were not at all in keeping with what Sarah s, actions, a mother worried about her daughter s safety, would have been After all, throughout the story she used her concern for Holly as her crutch for all of her actions, including her worry that Holly would become too attached to Jackson so it just didn t fit that not once, but twice, she d leave Holly with someone else while she ran off to try and figure out who was behind her husband s murder and who he was blackmailing So all things considered, this part of the story just wasn t something I was able to buy into and being amajorpart of the story line, I needed something somethingreal to make me accept their actions, their fear and desperation to solve this mystery. So, this is a hard book to rate, because I knew what the author was trying to tell me, I knew the emotions she was trying to convey, but those things didn t actually come through, never became anythingthan words on the page that never leapt out and grabbed me, convincing me to believe what I was being told or that what I was being told was important Honestly, I was pretty disappointed, and just about the time I was ready to throw in the towel, something else would happen, I d actually feel drawn into the story and couldn t wait to see what was going to happen next As I say, this is a hard book to rate, so I ll break it down this way Storyline and Character Potential 4 5 I could see where the story was going and loved the idea of it What was delivered 2.5 5 As I said, I could see where it was going, but I didn t feel it, never quite got there Writing 2 5 Again, it felt choppy and inconsistent, and didn t flow as smoothly as I would have liked But that said, I have to admit, the Raines brothers, Jackson, Gabe and Dev, have me intrigued, and despite my less than stellar review this book, I m definitely planning to read Gabriel s and Dev s stories How can that possibly be you might ask Well, I ll tell you There was so much potential in this book, and I m hoping that in the next, that potential will be met, that the writing will flow consistently and will grab me, draw me in and compel me to keep reading as only sections of Against the Winddid.2.75 5 Canyon, Wyoming who grew up on the wrong side of the tracks, were once hellraisers known as the no account Raines boys , and are now successful, honorable businessmen and confirmed bachelors.Widow Sarah Allen is leaving her troubled, painful past behind in Los Angeles to make a fresh start with her young daughter Holly in her hometown of Wind Canyon, Wyoming After enduring years of emotional, verbal, and physical abuse at the hands of her cruel, criminal husband, she s looking forward to the security, comfort, peace, and quiet of small town country living.Jackson Raines, the eldest of the Raines brothers, rose from a misspent, impoverished youth to make a minor name for himself in the world of Olympic boxing and then later found success and financial gain in oil stocks He s returned home to Wind Canyon to bring prestige to the Raines family name by purchasing and effectively running a large, prominent ranch. The last person Jackson expected to rent out his ranch s empty cottage is Sarah Allen, his former high school crush who broke his heart when she cruelly cut him down with hurtful words and humiliated him in front of their entire school Sarah is surprised to discover that Jackson is her new landlord She feels sorry for the way she treated him years ago as an impetuous girl anxious to get out of Wind Canyon She s determined to convince Jackson to let her and Holly stay in their quaint new home But starting over doesn t go quite as Sarah planned when problems arise from her murdered husband s illegal business dealings and she and Holly are threatened by his shady enemies.Jackson doesn t want to get involved with Sarah, but he s not about to abandon a neighbor in need, despite how she hurt him in the past and that the attraction he feels for her is stronger than ever Sarah s not used to having anyone else to rely on, but Jackson shows her what it means to finally have friends that you can trust As Jackson and Sarah work together to uncover who s harassing her, their explosive chemistry and intense attraction becomes too tempting to resist Neither of them wants complicated, emotional entanglements like relationships and love, but when their erotic passion leads to deeper feelings, will they take a risk and open their hearts And will Jackson be able to protect Sarah and Holly from danger Jackson and Sarah are a captivating couple and their relationship development and romantic progression was realistic, passionate, and heartfelt What I really loved about them together is that even though they both have reasons to be distrustful, their actions are those of mature, respectful adults who care about each other and are trying their best to navigate the precarious waters of dating Sarah is still healing from deep emotional scars inflected by her husband, but she s self aware enough to realize when past hurts and insecurities are affecting her connection with Jackson I really admired her strength, courage, and determination to make a happy, safe, and peaceful life for her daughter Jackson is such a rugged, sweet, and protective alpha hero, and his quiet toughness and caring of Sarah and Holly was sexy, touching, and endearing He s also a demanding, skilled, and attentive lover, and the love scenes were sensual and steamy Against the Wind is a great read that truly delivers all the elements that make for a satisfying romance wonderful characters, suspense, action, dramatic twists, surprising plot turns, heartwarming emotion, and hot love scenes This is the first book I ve read by Kat Martin, but it definitely won t be my last I m looking forward toof the sexy Raines brothers with Gabriel s story, Against the Fire, in Feb 2011 and then Devlin s story, Against the Law, in Mar 2011 I recommend this for contemporary romance and romantic suspense readers and fans of authors like Robyn Carr, Geralyn Dawson, and Linda Lael Miller This was an ARC, received courtesy of NetGalley.com. Good book that kept me interested to the end Sarah has returned to Wind Canyon after the murder of her husband She had left town in search of a better life and thought she found it, only to find that her husband was abusive and a crook She has sold everything to pay his debts but is still being harassed by people who are looking for something he had She has gotten a job with the local paper and rented a cottage for herself and her daughter on one of the local ranches Then she discovers that Good book that kept me interested to the end Sarah has returned to Wind Canyon after the murder of her husband She had left town in search of a better life and thought she found it, only to find that her husband was abusive and a crook She has sold everything to pay his debts but is still being harassed by people who are looking for something he had She has gotten a job with the local paper and rented a cottage for herself and her daughter on one of the local ranches Then she discovers that the ranch belongs to Jackson Raines, the guy she treated so badly back in high school Jackson and his brothers were the local bad boys Their parents were drunks and the boys were constantly in trouble Jackson had left town after high school and ended up making a boatload of money He then came home and bought a ranch He s not at all happy to find Sarah on his ranch, as he still remembers his humiliation at her hands She appears to have changed, but he s not inclined to trust her However, when trouble follows her to Wyoming he steps in to help her.I liked Jackson He is the type of man that can t walk away from someone in trouble Though he isn t sure whether he can fully trust her, he can see that Sarah is in bad trouble I liked the way that he wants to help her find out who is after her and why He is also still attracted to her which adds to his desire to help her As he learnsabout what her marriage was like he s impressed by the strength she showed to survive it Though he hasn t had any plans to marry thetime he spends with Sarah and her daughter thethe idea appeals I really liked the close relationship he has with his brothers.Sarah was a little harder to like, at least at the beginning Her treatment of Jackson in the past had been needlessly cruel which didn t set a good tone I was a bitsympathetic to her asdetails of her marriage were revealed It was a little hard to believe in her quick relationship with Jackson as I expected her marriage to have hadof an impact on her feelings about men She comes to love him very much, but fears what her troubles could do to him so she tries to end things She also hasissues from her marriage than she has told him about. The mystery itself was pretty well done Each time that Jackson and Sarah think that they have made progress something else is uncovered that leads them on another chase There were a few things that went on that stretched believability a bit, but overall kept me involved The final confrontation at the end was definitely intense and kept me wondering if everyone was going to come through it okay There was a very interesting twist involving the identity of her husband s murderer that I really didn t see coming
